Shop the SLC: A Winter Marketplace, Nov. 25th -29th

Nov. 25th -29th 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

This year marks the 5th year anniversary of Shop the SLC – a marketplace that provides the opportunity for vendors, both seasoned and new, to sell goods at a free booth in an established market.

Participating as a vendor is the perfect way to explore the entrepreneurial world for the first time, grow a new business, or share your established business with the community – and it’s free!

Shop the SLC is proud to bring a diverse collection of talent, passion, and experience together for an event that inspires, supports, and connects budding businesses within the Ryerson community!

Vendors of all kinds are welcome; art, crafts, clothes, food, services, technology, jewelry and more! If you make or provide something and want to connect with the Ryerson community, this is the perfect event for you.

Vendors will need to be prepared to have items ready to sell, or an on-the-spot service to offer to the Ryerson community. We will provide you with table space (varying sizes available), for you to decorate and personalize to reflect your business.

As a vendor you will be invited to a Meet n’ Greet event prior to Shop the SLC on Thursday, November 21st. The Meet n’ Greet will provide information about the market as well as an opportunity to network and meet other vendors.

New This Year:

Application is now open to external community members who have been referred by a Ryerson member. Those applying as a Friend of Ryerson (a referred vendor who is not a student, staff or faculty) will pay a fee of $100 for their booth. This fee helps our team at the Student Learning Centre continue to support student-focused activities, events, and projects that engage the Ryerson community and enhance the student experience.

By inviting vendors beyond the student, staff and faculty community we aim to expand the Shop the SLC network to bring in established entrepreneurs to connect with students. If you know a vendor that would be a good fit, send them the link to the vendor application form! When filling out the form, outside vendors must provide a Ryerson contact with a Ryerson email address as a referral.

While this initiative will allow for greater network opportunities, we will continue to prioritize the Ryerson community as vendors. We are committed to keeping 80% of available booths dedicated to Ryerson students, staff and faculty.

New Compost Bins!

As part of a campus wide commitment to sustainability, and thanks to Ryerson Facilities Services and Sustainability, the SLC now has 4-stream waste bins where students can compost their organics! 

The signage on the bins has also been updated to make them more accessible and clear to all Ryerson students, faculty, and staff. 

Previously, our 3-stream waste bins only included space for cans and bottles, mixed paper, and garbage. With these new 4-stream bins, students will now have the ability to compost organic waste! 

Organic waste is material from living organisms like plants and animals. This includes food like leftovers, peels, and greens. Providing students with compost disposal at the SLC supports Ryerson’s commitment to sustainability. 

Did you know that 26 per cent of items in our landfill consist of organics? This is very harmful to the environment! Organic waste in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

In 2018, Ryerson produced 1,000 tonnes of waste that ended up in a landfill, much of which could have been recycled or composted. Let’s work together to reduce this number! 

In Summer and Fall 2018, Facilities Services and Sustainability conducted a waste engagement survey to gain student, faculty, and staff feedback. With close to 800 responses, these new bins were designed to reduce Ryerson’s eco footprint and make waste management easier for everyone. 

As members of the Ryerson community and stewards of our great planet, we are all responsible for doing our part in creating a sustainable campus. 

Do your part in protecting our beautiful planet by remembering to read the signs carefully and throw out your waste accordingly!

SLC to close at 5 p.m. on Aug 29 for SLC Live

The building will close at 5 p.m. on Aug 29 to prepare for the SLC Live event that evening.

The SLC will close early on Thursday, Aug 29 at 5 p.m. to prepare to host SLC Live, the biggest event of Ryerson’s Orientation Week. CGWRs will close at 4 p.m.

Alternative study space is available across campus including the Library, POD, ENG and RCC (campus map). Thank you for your understanding and co-operation!

The SLC re-opens on Friday, Aug 30 at 8:30 a.m. as normal.

Don’t forget that we are closed for the Labour Day long weekend and we begin operating on Fall hours on Tuesday, Sept 3.

The SLC is Hiring!

The SLC is looking for SLC Specialists.

Contract starts Sept 3rd, 2019 and ends April 30th, 2020.

The SLC Specialists are key members of Ryerson’s Student Learning Centre’s (SLC) frontline team known as the Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL) Team. The SEAL Team is a dedicated group committed to making the SLC a world-class learning destination. We collaborate with various stakeholders to foster student engagement and pride of place, ensuring the SLC is a physical manifestation of Ryerson’s spirit. 

Reporting to the SLC Assistants, Specialists enhance Ryerson’s reputation by providing excellent customer service, assisting in the daily operations of the SLC, and embodying the SLC Principles. We pride ourselves in ensuring students are integrated into the core of operations as this demonstrates the importance Ryerson places on student-centred ideas and decisions. 

This position is an exciting opportunity to:

  • Gain experience working as part of a supportive team focused on professional development
  • Gain experience in problem solving by participating in staff hackathons, providing feedback, and supporting events and students with on the floor decision making
  • Enhance skills in data organization using technology and traditional means
  • Learn to communicate effectively using an interoffice messaging app, radios, and email
  • Gain experience providing world class customer service
  • Enhance presentation skills with opportunities to guide tours

Improvements coming soon! SLC’s 5th and 8th floors to be renovated this summer

What you need to know about closures during renovations

Renovations coming soon to the 5th and 8th floors

The 5th and 8th floors of the SLC will be closed for renovations at certain times this summer. We are making improvements to CGWR’s and open spaces to provide students an even better experience in the building.

What’s happening?

  • Repainting the walls on 5th and 8th floors
  • Sound absorption installation in all CGWR’s
  • Installing new whiteboards
  • Carpets removed in 5th and 8th floor CGWRs
  • New carpeting on the 8th floor open spaces

When are the closures?

5th Floor

  • CGWR’s are offline and unavailable from June 24 to July 29
  • The entire floor is closed for construction from July 7 to July 18

8th Floor

  • CGWR’s are offline and unavailable from July 8 to August 10
  • The entire floor is closed for construction from July 22 to August 10

There will be no elevator access to the 5th and 8th floors during the construction periods. Elevators will bypass those floors during those dates.

SLC Gould Street entrance re-opened

UPDATE — June 14, 2019, 10:30 a.m.: The SLC’s main entrance has re-opened following an earlier police investigation that closed Gould Street.

The main entrance of the SLC is closed this morning due to an on-going police investigation on Gould Street. The SLC is open and accessible via the 2nd floor Library bridge.  Enter through the Library entrance on Nelson Mandela Walk or Jorgenson Hall at 380 Victoria St.

We apologize for the inconvenience. We will post a follow-up message when our Gould Street entrance re-opens.

Happy Pride Month from the SLC

The SLC came to life on Monday as we hosted two incredible events!

Pride Kick-Off, hosted by Positive Space

The morning started with the installation of the Pride flag above the Library’s Research Help centre – at the Library’s westside entrance located on the SLC’s second floor. The flag was installed by Positive Space, in collaboration with the Library. Positive Space is a volunteer staff and faculty community network for people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions, committed to creating and maintaining a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

At noon, Positive Space hosted the Pride Kick-Off event in the SLC’s Amphitheatre. All community members were welcome to join in the celebration as speakers touched upon what pride means to them and their community, and brought forward a call to action to encourage equity, and to empower the lost voices in the community. Speakers also discussed this year’s Display Your Pride themes of environmental sustainability, and impactful, systemic change.

While Pride Kick-Off was taking place on the first floor, Trans Youth Canada’s event Restoring the Circle: Trans Youth Inclusion in Healthcare, Schools, and Social Services was taking place on the eighth. This trans youth-led event partners young trans community educators with international leaders to teach about inclusion across service sectors.

The SLC is excited to take part in the #DisplayYourPride Contest running until June 13th. We invite you to stop by our Welcome Desk and Headquarters at LIB 272B SLC 516 from June 10th – June 13th to check out our progress or get involved!

Our number one principle is meeting the needs of our students and we strive to continually evolve our practices, training, and processes as we learn from our community.

Earth Hour at the SLC

The SLC, and Ryerson University, will be joining millions from around the world participating in Earth Hour 2019 to continue raising awareness on the interconnectivity of climate change with the benefits of nature and people.

On March 30th from 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM the SLC will be switching off our lights as a symbol of our commitment to continually improve our environmental impact. Take this time to share your support, ideas, and personal connection to nature using #Connect2Earth.

The following non-essential lighting in and around the SLC will be turned off from 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM:

  • Lights on Floors 3 and 4
  • Lights installed on the windows on Floors 1 and 2
  • Lights on Floors 5 to 8, depending on occupancy
  • Exterior lights

All floors and areas will be monitored accordingly. Lights will not be turned off if there are any perceived risks.

This Saturday we invite you to switch off your lights and #Connect2Earth.
