The Beach

The sixth floor of the SLC is one of our most renowned floors! With its summer-like vibe, views of the city, and relaxed environment, this floor offers the largest casual study space for students in the building.

This floor is known as The Beach because of its bright colours and architecture. It can hold more than 200 people and is the perfect gathering space for Toronto Metropolitan University students to come hang out and work in.

This floor welcomes students to come socialize, de-stress, study, and more! It is a good place to meet with friends, eat lunch, and enjoy a nice escape from the busyness of the city.

“I find that it’s very important for the general atmosphere of the university, to give students the opportunity to relax and have a good time,” said  Daniel Medetbayev, a computer engineering student. “This floor has a very comforting atmosphere.”

There are many parts to this floor that work together to make it The Beach. The blonde wood floors are the sand, the blue carpet in the south-west corner is the water, and the circular lighting emulates the sun. Along with the bright furniture, this floor has the perfect summer feel!

Ramps are integrated into the design of this floor to allow easy access to all levels for students and guests with accessibility needs. As a play on the beach concept, sound wave stickers have been placed on each of the ramps to help keep them free and easy to use for those who need them.

There are a lot of cool features that make this space awesome for students, including the furniture. This is the only floor in the SLC that has bean bags for students to curl up on and relax. There are reclining body chairs for laid back studying or catching up with a friend, and cushions to sit on as well.

“I think it’s very convenient,” said Erykah Kerr, a student in the child and youth care program.  “You have a chill space to be on your own, you don’t have to keep the noise down, and you’re comfortable here.

This floor also has mobile whiteboards that students can use to collaborate and work without having to book out a Collaborative and Group Work Room.

Another useful SLC feature that comes in handy, especially on a sunny floor like The Beach are the blinds. They are programmed based on geolocation scheduling to match the position of the sun, so they rise and fall automatically based on the sun’s position. This helps create the perfect environment for students.

Next time you need a break or a place to take a breather, make sure to find yourself a cozy spot at The Beach and unwind!
